less heat and more religion.
I went to buy a sim card yesterday, so do send me a text if you feel like it or are just drunk. 00963 955621530. A guy from my course showed me where the phone shop was. He spoke french and his arabic is pretty perfect, he cant read or write though. anyways, i was almost convinced he was french with an arab background maybe. well no. very syrian. but i noticed that too late... i obviously know about the relation between syria and israel, and i knew people here speak generally not much about politics (still being paranoid from the stasi-like periods) and i also knew that i shouldnt tell anyone that i was going to israel after this (even saying"Tel Aviv" out loud in a schwarma stall isnt most advisable...) but what i couldnt know was that his father was the chief of the syrian army in the yom kippur war in 1973. it became an interesting conversation after all - we both swallowed our cliches and opinions as best we could - and spent the whole afternoon talking politics. people were looking at us, as it isnt very common for a syrian guy to sit with a western girl in a park on the loan, eating tabouleh, speaking english. but it was all worth it. the weekend has started. i will go up north to Aleppo, the biggest city in damascus with a souq that is allegedly (felipe, using"allegedly", i always have to think of you. somehow. ;-)) 12 km long. aham... we shall see.for now i ve just come back from the damascene souq, having visited the umayaad mosque. for those of you that havent played enough trivial pursuit or studied art history in freiburg (aham...), let me give you some intellectual stimulation. the umayaad mosque certainly is the most important religious building in syaria, in terms of architectural splendour it ranks with the Dome of the Rocks in Jerusalem, but in sanctity it comes after the mosques of Mecca and Medina. The site itself has been worshipped for 3000 years now. (3000!!!), when the Aramaeans built a temple to their god, with the Romans it became later associated with Jupiter. After Constantine embraced Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire, it became a christian church... When the Muslims entered damascus in AD 636, they converted part of the basilica into a mosque but allowed the christians their worship in the other part. This didnt last long though and the with the new caliph, the basilica was flattened and rebuilt over the next 10 years.... This cost seven years of taxes from the whole of Syria... imagine: according to historical accounts, practically every wall was covered with rich mosaics, precious stones were set into the prayer niches and the wooden ceiling was inlaid with told and hung with 600 lamps, also made of gold. While the mosque has been harmed by invading Mongols (!!!), rocked by earthquakes and gutted by fire, what remains is impressive. After we received"special clothing" i.e. full length brown robes, we were allowed entrance into the prayer halls even, an almost meditative place, very popular for families even because the carpets in the hall make it a perfect gym for kids... The mausoleum of Saladin is next to the mosque, its restoration was a gift by Kaiser WillhelmII by the way. Memo: need to read 1001 Nights. While I need to go study for a test on sunday. The supposedly holy sunday. Ma'salaama.x
